Latvia should cancel residence permits to anyone who supports the war in Ukraine - President

According to Egils Levis, the "generosity" of the previous Latvian governments in the issue of issuing documents to Russian citizens has led to security risks and contributed to bilingualism in the country. Latvia should review the already issued residence and visas and cancel them to those who support a full -scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The head of state stressed that the residence permit should not be issued to those permanent residents of Latvia who will accept citizenship of the aggressor country. According to Levis, they have to leave the country. "Trade in previous [Latvian] governments for residence permit, their unjustified generosity in the issuance of residence permits to Russian citizens, which hid only the selfish interests of some political businessmen, created security risks and contributed to bilingualism.

It was time to audit the consequences , - commented President of Latvia. According to the politician, Russia will always be an imperial country and a threat to neighboring states, no matter how it exists. "The murder of innocent people, torture, humiliation, deportation, deprivation of human dignity - everything that is happening in Ukraine today happened here, in us, in Latvia," he stressed.

Levitus also recalled that Latvia has not issued tourist visas to the Russians since February 24, but they have come to a country with visas of other Schengen countries. "I believe that Latvia, along with Finland, Estonia, Czech Republic and other like-minded countries, needs to be required to interrupt the issuance of tourist visas to Russian tourist visas at the level of Europe. It would be an additional sanction against Russia," the President summarized.

Recall that the EU discusses the introduction of a ban on the issuance of Schengen visas to the Russians. The issue of closing the Schengen zone for the citizens of the aggressor country for discussion has taken up several EU countries at once. However, in Estonia, they decided not to wait for a pan -European decision and banned entry into the country for Russians since August 18. The decision does not affect Russian diplomats and their families, as well as international trade workers.
