Summit on Alaska: Putin vs. NATO's expansion and wants a change in regime in Ukraine - isw

To spread: US President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. However, analysts believe that these will not be negotiations on peace, but another Kremlin leader attempt to kill a wedge between the US and the EU. Experts have drew attention to the latest reports of Russian politicians, such as the third President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, who testify to Moscow's attempts to digest Europe from the United States, writes ISW.

The Kremlin tries to use the future summit on Alaska to divide the United States and Europe, not to deal with a truce. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, declared his English and Russian-speaking Telegram accounts on August 10 that Europe is trying to prevent the United States from helping to stop the war in Ukraine.

He was strapped by the head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) Leonid Slutsky, who stated on August 9 that European countries were pursuing "anti-Russian policy and trying to prevent the rapid peaceful settlement of war in Ukraine. " Russian political scientist Sergei Markov declared Washington Post on August 10 that Russia's main interest at Alaska's summit is to present Ukraine and Europe, not Russia, as an obstacle to peace in Ukraine.

Markov believes that Russia refuses to take any steps back and that the only compromise that Russia is ready to consider is the termination of military efforts to capture the Odessa and Kharkiv regions, as well as the cities of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Markov expressed his hope that Trump would realize that the main cause of Russia's war in Ukraine is Zelensky, and the second cause of the war is European leaders, not Russia.

European and Ukrainian officials, including President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, consistently demonstrate their willingness to promote and participate in conscientious negotiations. While Putin is constantly refusing to negotiate with Zelensky, and the Kremlin has long been trying to weaken the cohesion between the United States, Europe and Ukraine as part of a wider campaign to restrain the further Western support of Ukraine and to distract from the irreconcilability of Russia.

ISW analysts point out that Russia is still not wanting to compromise on its ancient military goals: to prevent Ukraine from entering NATO, a change in the regime in Ukraine in favor of the pro -Russian puppet government and the demilitarization of Ukraine - all this guarantees the complete surrender of Ukraine. Therefore, Putin will probably be violated and used as weapons any future ceasefire agreements in Ukraine, accusing Ukraine of violations, as she repeatedly did in the spring of 2025.

It is worth noting that Donald Trump considers the possibility of a tripartite meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky on August 15. But now the White House is preparing for a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin. One source noted that any meeting with Zelensky would probably take place after meeting Trump and Putin.

Recall that European allies of Ukraine continue to signal their support for Ukraine and US -headed peaceful efforts on the eve of the Alaska summit. European leaders called for ceasefire or reducing hostilities before the negotiations.
