Artem Dimid. An honest answer to the main question in the day of war

Yaroslav Gritsak Historian, Professor of Ukrainian Catholic University on July 28, takes 40 days from the death on the front of Artem Dimid. His funeral in the garrison church of Peter and Paul in Lviv was one of those events, the memory of which is difficult to erase the most effective and accurate definition of war gave Herodotus: "When peace, children bury their parents when war, parents bury their children. " On July 28, 40 days depart from the death on the front of Artem Dimid.

His funeral in the garrison church of Peter and Paul in Lviv was one of the events that it is difficult to erase. Mother Artem, famous artist Ivanka Krypiakevich, sang lullaby to her son. Father, Fr. Mikhail Dimid, the first rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, began and ended with his speech with the words "Christ Risen!". So Christians greet each other for Easter. O.

Michael wanted to say such an untimely greeting that his son, after the resurrection of Christ, did not die - he was revived to another life. It is said that the culture of society can be determined by how it treats death. Our modern civilization is ashamed of it, hides in the darkest corner of our daily life - death is difficult to "sell" as a product in a commercialized society. It is also communist with societies. People in it - transportation material.

If their dignity was not respected for life, what is the point of doing it after their death? In 2005, I was looking for my wife's relatives in Yasinovatiy. It was impossible to find something there: weeds and thistles reached human growth. Artem grew up in a Galician family. For us historians, this family is especially important. The mother of Artem, Ivanka, is the granddaughter of the famous Ukrainian historian Ivan Krypiakevich.

Ivan Krypiakevich was a student of Mikhail Hrushevsky, and in 1960s, when after long wandering in Stalin times, he was appointed director of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences Isaevich, Larisa Krushelnytska, Oleg Kupchinsky, Orest Matsyuk. This is the famous "effect of Lviv" that allowed to ensure the intellectual gravity of generations even in the Soviet times. Artem also graduated from the Faculty of History. But he wanted to create history than to write it.

His short life is full of stories, which we now mention with a smile - also because a smile was a brand of Artem. There was something very adventurous in him - the adventurous in the sense of the Cossack in the steppe or Indiana Jones, an eternal adventure seeker. I heard the story of how he left for the Crimea after the Euromaidan and lived there in a state of the enemy, giving himself a young Don Cossack. Another story recounts how he drove from one coast to another on a motorcycle.

The war caught Artem in America. When he sat on a plane in Ukraine, he was not allowed to board with the protective ammunition, which he bought for himself to the front. Then he put on this ammunition on himself and flew home. I do not run for the accuracy of these stories. I heard about them, but did not check - future historians will do it. But there is one of them to check.

When Artem's mother was handed over his personal belongings, she found a read by Tomyk Seneca, with underlining and artem comments in the fields. Seneca translator, famous Lviv translator and essayist Andrey Sodomora has published all Artem notes, they can be read on the Zbruch website.

He drew attention to the coincidence of the circumstances: Roman Ratushny, another Ukrainian hero who died in front of Artemy Dimid - had a call sign "Seneca", and his father in Facebook text about his son, resists at the thoughts of Seneca "letters. Every human life has no price. It is not in the sense that its price is very low, but in the sense that it is the highest value.

Therefore, the loss of each of them is a universal tragedy, which must be dignified and mourn - of course, in societies where the concept of "dignity" is not empty. But the war has a special effect of Darwinovsky's selection on the contrary. According to Darwin, during evolution survive those species that are the strongest. In the twentieth century, as a result of wars and repression, the most active, most intelligent, most working, most working, were first killed.

In the current conversations in the day of war, the question of how to stop this Darwin counter -revolution raises. The first and fair answer: it is necessary to build and strengthen the institutions where such children are grown. It is not just about families-such as the family of Dimidov-Crypiakevich. Such families are a national achievement, but also a product of nature that we have no influence. First of all, it is about such educational institutions that provide education with values.

The parents of Artem Dimid asked not to carry flowers and wreaths on the grave of his son, but to make a sacrifice for his name scholarship, which would allow gifted children to study at UCU. Do not take it as an advertisement of the institution where I work. Look for such institutions yourself, and better build them. My dream is that they appear not only in Kiev or Lviv, but in every major Ukrainian city, but first of all - in those that are destroyed by war.
