Dron destroyed the Russian RLS "Sky-U" for $ 100 million: why is it a big loss for Russia

According to Professor Andriy Kharuk, the maximum distance of detection of the Sky-U RLS of great goals as a passenger plane is 700 km. In mid-April 2024, the Security Service of Ukraine announced the destruction of the Radolocation Station (RLS) "Sky-U" located in Russia. Doctor of History, Professor of the National Academy of Land Forces. Hetman Peter Sahaidachny Andriy Kharuk told the Armyinform how this equipment was arranged and works.

According to the SBU, "Sky-U" defined air targets along the northern border of Ukraine and was located in the Bryansk region (Russian Federation), which prevented the penetration of Ukrainian drones into the enemy for attack. In his publication, the Armyinform said that its value is $ 100 million. Andriy Haruk called the destroyed target extremely important and rare. The radar is equipped with a long -range knitted council and belongs to the Family Metro range, which was developed during the USSR.

The expert noted that the meter range means a long range, which involves large antennas. Thus, the height of the antenna is 43 m, and the power of the radar in the pulse is 500 kW (average - 5 kW). Sky systems have a cross -shaped antenna lattice, the horizontal part of which is antenna of rangefinders, and the vertical - the antenna of the Hypotomera.

The scanning of the space in the horizontal plane is carried out due to the mechanical rotation of the antenna system, in the vertical plane - due to the intra -pulled scanning of the height beam at the indication of the rangefinder.

The expert noted that the modernization of this equipment increased the height determination zone and increased the accuracy of coordinate measurement, improved protection against active obstacles and characteristics of electromagnetic compatibility, increased efficiency control. Usually, the Sky-U system is carried on three platforms, where the antenna, hardware, diesel generator and a remote control point, which allows the radar to control the radar at a distance of 1 km.

As for the range of "Sky-U", the expert noted that the system is not capable of controlling the airspace over all over Ukraine. The maximum distance of detection of large goals, such as a passenger aircraft, is 700 km. "This radar sees the fighter at a distance of 400 km, but at a high altitude of 20 km. If the fighter goes at a height of 10 km, then the detection range is reduced to 310 km, 3 km - up to 170 km, 500 m - up to 65 km", The professor explained.

Haruk added that, nevertheless, the radar is a significant problem for Ukrainian aviation in the frontline. And in addition, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in service also have more advanced radars-"Sky-MU" and "Sky-T". Earlier, we wrote that Leschek and Volnoresis are ineffective against FPV drones.
