This was reported in the publication of the Modern Warfare Warfare Warfare Dacian Draco on the social network, which often outlines news about the military sphere from Romania. The Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitalization of Romania Bogdan-Gruy Ivan emphasized the country's participation in the unit of the drone, which involves local production of optoelectronic equipment and computer systems.
The Iar-99 SM (Modernized Standard) is aimed at modernizing ten Iar-99 șOim (Standard) aircraft in the SM version within the 2020 contract between the Romania and Avione Craiova. A contract worth 275 million lei (approximately $ 57 million) provides for the supply of all ten aircraft for four years. But during the first three years, no aircraft was delivered through the Covid-19 pandemic and supply chain caused by war in Ukraine.
The tests of the first modernized aircraft began in December last year, the other nine aircraft are at different stages of repair or modernization. Modernization covers advanced Avionic systems, compatible with NATO standards, such as the pro-fetus display, multifunctional displays and built-in virtual avionic systems. Romanian aircraft are equipped for air and terrestrial combat, including integration with Iris-T missile.
Thanks to the integration of the air-air-air-air-99SM rocket becomes a universal training aircraft and a light rustic. Early attempts to upgrade the Iar-99 began in the 1990s: they improved avionic and compatibility with modern systems. In 1990, cooperation with Jaffe Aircraft Corporation presented Honeywell Avionywell.
In 1992, the IAR-109 SWIFT project, developed in conjunction with the Lahav Israeli company, contained Hotas management elements, HUD systems, multifunctional displays and was integrated with NATO weapons. But the 1994 project was collapsed after limited progress. In 1996, the program was restored from Elbit Systems, as a result, Iar-99C șOim appeared, which included a avionic, compatible with the modernization of Mig-21 Lancer and modern learning systems.
