The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation achieved the benefits of using UAV against Ukraine: how did they succeed - Le Monde

To spread: Recently, Russian troops in the war against Ukraine have achieved advantages in the use of UAVs, as they began to widely use fiber -optic drones with complete invulnerability of the signal. About it writes the French edition of Le Monde at the end of March 2025. Journalists suggested that this was a significant impact on the partial release of the Russians in the Kursk region.

Controlled with a very thin and very light fiber-optic cable in a few tens of kilometers, "driven on the wire" drones that the Russian army actively uses from the autumn 2024, which is immune to radio electronic obstacles. French journalists say that over the last three years of the Great War, ingenuity and ability to adapt the Ukrainian army have been highly appreciated, in particular on the use of drones.

However, it was the Russian troops that have taken advantage in recent months, using innovations, which was important for partial reconciliation of part of the Kursk region. In the autumn of the Armed Forces, drones with wired guidance were the first to use, that is, those that are guided with the help of a long thin fiber cable to solve the problem of radio electronic obstacles.

"Their spread reached such a scale that both sides gradually equipped themselves with devices of obstacles to neutralize them by breaking the radio signal between the pilot and its apparatus. Such a drone is equipped with a slice with a disposable fiber -optic coil, the weight of which is from less than 300 g per 1 km to 4. 8 kg per 30 km. When the updated UAVs first appeared on the forefront, "Ukrainians usually laughing at them", as the publication writes.

"Then they began to copy them, which proves their efficiency. Because they are not acceptable to obstacles, the only way to neutralize them is to shoot, but it is very difficult," the material reads. In early 2025, the Ukrainian military unit "Magyara Birds" reported a new method of intercepting Russian FPV-ducts on optolokon.

Analysts have explained that after detection of the FPV-zero of the enemy, drones-interceptors, capable of destroying Russian apparatus before they reach their goal, will rise into the air. A distinctive feature of Russian UAVs is a massive feed coil containing a strong but thin cable that connects the drone with the operator. Thanks to this management, the drone maintains communication even during the flight near the ground and inside buildings, which makes it especially dangerous in combat.
