Useful for Ukraine: Europe wants to abandon the US weapon by restoring its industry - the media

According to journalists, in Europe they want to establish their own production of weapons. This will be useful for Ukraine's security as well as the EU in general. The United States gives a clear signal to European leaders that need to increase defense costs. At the same time, Washington wants Europe to buy more American weapons, but some allies want to grow production at home. Politico writes about it.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron at the Globsec Conference in Bratislava, it is necessary to develop a truly European military-technological and industrial base in all interested countries. It is reported that after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the expenditures of weapons of European states for defense increased by almost $ 13% to $ 345 billion. Most of the expenses were a reaction to a full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

The material states that about half of money for the defense of European countries goes to US weapons. For the US, this situation is profitable, but some Europe's policies want to change it. According to journalists, the current tension in Brussels is associated with whether a new pan -European defense policy is limited to EU companies. This position is defended by Macron and Tierry Breton, the commissioner from the domestic market.

"Our plan is to directly support EU money through the effort to build our defense industry," Breton said. In his opinion, this will be useful for both Ukraine and the common security of Europe. However, European countries are still very dependent on the United States. It is reported that the most common expensive product is the F-35 shock fighter Lockheed Martin, the cost of which is $ 80 million apiece.

The publication writes that the war in Ukraine emphasized the dominance of the US defense industry. For example, Poland has signed a $ 1. 4 billion this year to buy 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks, as well as another $ 10 billion agreement for the purchase of high -mobile Lockheed Martin artillery missile systems. According to journalists, such agreements are concerned in Europe as to whether the European Union will abandon the US defense industry.

But the need to replenish weapons and continue delivery of equipment to Ukraine is relevant, and after decades, the defense industry of the continent is difficult to adapt. It should be reminded that on June 14, the UK Ministry of Defense stated that world arms reserves were declining. The junior minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans James Hippie referred to the lack of production facilities and complexity related to the supply chain for the production of weapons needed by the Armed Forces.
