Due to the war in Ukraine: Stoltenberg may remain a NATO Secret General for another year - Politico

Sources within the Alliance say that its members understand the need to elect a new Secretary-General, but through the force majeure, Stoltenberg's powers can continue for a year. The term of office of the current NATO Secretary -General Jens Stoltenberg pops up in September 2023, but his mandate wants to extend another year through the war in Ukraine. About it reports Politico.

The Alliance's high -ranking official told reporters that there is a clear understanding of its members that a "fresh air sip" was needed, or rather a new Secretary General. The publication reports that the next Secretary General will be forced to balance. "On the one hand, to encourage the Alliance members to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine and to increase their defense, and on the other - to remain out of conflict. Some are tested for this role," the statement said.

A high -ranking European diplomat has reported that discussions are currently underway and the most acceptable option is to continue the powers of the current Secretary General for a year. Among NATO head candidates are also referred to as Prime Minister Estonia Kai Callas, UK Defense Minister Ben Volles and the Netherlands Chief of the Netherlands.

The candidates of Lithuania Ingrida Shimonite, the Chairman of the European Commission Ursula von Der Lyen and Slovakia President of Slovakia Zuzana Chaputova are also discussed. We will remind, earlier Focus informed that on January 30, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Putin did not refuse to control Ukraine and prepares the Russian Federation for the continuation of the war.
