Drones and work: As France prepares its "army of the future" on the basis of Ukrainian experience

General Bruno Barats, the commander of the future combat programs of the French army, said that the operational capabilities of land robots could be accessible to advanced units for three years. "We expect that long by 2040 we will unfold advanced systems of practical value in our combat units," Barats said, emphasizing the relevance and urgency of current development efforts.

The recent trials under the Cohoma, which took place at the test landfill near Paris, participated in autonomous platforms, equipped with various solutions for mobility, legs, wheels and tracked systems that maneuver the rough terrain and overcome artificial obstacles. These machines were entrusted with different imitations of the battlefield, including the bypass of improvised traps, conducting exploration of the terrain and maintaining a position in the conditions of an imaginary enemy.

Cohoma participants emphasized the need to transfer robotics from laboratories to real conditions. Although land tests of robotics officially began in 2021, lessons learned from the continued war in Ukraine were significantly influenced by the pace and direction of development, because this war showed the importance of the role of inexpensive unmanned aircraft in intelligence and combat operations.

One of the prototypes, represented by the French defense contractor Thales, had a built -in function of launching drones, which made it possible to launch a reconnaissance UAV for mapping of terrain and the early detection of dangers. Such hybrid solutions emphasize the growing interest in multidisciplinary robotic integration of air and terrestrial components.
