Ukraine can become a member of NATO even with the occupied territories: Stoltenberg called the condition
In history, there have already been cases where the article on collective security has not defended the entire territory of the country, the former General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg reminded. The scenario in which Ukraine becomes a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, even with some occupied territories, is quite real. Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this, according to Financial Times.
The politician noted that the United States has security guarantees for Japan, but they do not apply, for example, to the Kuril Islands, which Tokyo considers its territory controlled by Russia. Stoltenberg also mentioned Germany of the Cold War, which considered the so -called. "GDR" as part of a single country, but the military-political block protected only the territory of the former "Germany".
"When there is a will, there are ways to find a solution," said the former NATO Secretary -General, stating that a clear border is still needed to determine where the article on collective security will apply. And Ukraine must control the entire territory to this border, - Stoltenberg summarized.
