Will there be a "collapse" of Pokrovsk: 200 Russian soldiers entered the city, but there is no front line, ISW (maps)
The Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, reported to Putin about the "successes" of the Russians in Vovchansk, Kupyansk, Kostiantynivka, and Pokrovsk, according to a report by analysts of the Institute for the Study of War. The report pays special attention to Pokrovsk, as the Kremlin is trying to convince the world community to surround 3,000 Ukrainians in order to put pressure on Kyiv and Washington.
In fact, the Russians occupied several small settlements that are barely visible on the map. And that's why we are not talking about the "successes" of the Russian Federation and the loss of Pokrovsk, the analysts concluded. The ISW report appeared on the network in the evening of October 26 and concerns, among other things, the events in the area of the front near Pokrovsk-Myrnogral-Dobropilly.
Analysts failed to find confirmation of Gerasimov's words that Pokrovsk was locked in a ring and almost captured. Russian media bloggers write about this, ridiculing the exaggerated reports of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and warning that "successes" will catch up with reality in at least a month. Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that about 200 Russian soldiers entered the city, and controversial events are being held there today.
The fighting in the settlement has a peculiarity, the report notes. It turned out that it is impossible to clearly determine where the front line is, because "the positions of both sides are intertwined. " "ISW continues to assess that Russian forces are making gains near and within Pokrovsk and Mirnograd that are tactically significant but likely do not portend an imminent collapse of Ukrainian defenses in the area," the report said.
You can learn about the battles in Pokrovsk from the maps of the front line compiled by ISW analysts. On the map for October 26, we can see that a red strip cuts through the city from south to north, in which soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces are probably located. The Russians reached the E-50 highway in a wide strip, which runs from west to east and goes towards Mirnograd.
On both sides of this strip are the western and eastern outskirts of Pokrovsk, which are under the control of the Armed Forces. The map does not show any blocked areas, which contradicts the statements of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, as of October 26, analysts of the DeepState project have identified two "gray" zones in Pokrovsk where fighting is taking place.
The previous map change took place on October 24: a narrow breakthrough of the Russians appeared from the southern outskirts towards the railway station, and now this zone has expanded to the western quarters. The report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which appeared on the morning of October 27, informs about 34 attacks by the Russian Armed Forces in the Pokrovsky direction.
The command's report showed that this was the hottest part of the front, because there were 18 and 14 assaults on the closest Russian activities (Vovchansk and Oleksandrivka and Kostiantynivka, respectively). It should be noted that on October 20 Focus talked about the battles in Pokrovsk according to the estimates of a soldier of the Armed Forces with the call sign "Muchnoi".
