Dad Smurf (John Gudman) enters another dimension, and a group of Smurfs led by Smurfetta (Rihanna) carry out a large voyage in different worlds, where there are their communities of Smurfs, who live in parallel worlds in their manner. In general, the plot of the animated film is largely reminiscent of "trolls": the same fabulous village, popular songs performed by fairy -tale characters, the fight against great and authoritative evil, which threatens the existence of a population of fairytale creatures. Some complexity of the plot (other dimensions and that is all) indicates the desire of the screenwriters to attract a parental audience rather than the child, however, as in the case of "trolls".

From the funny turns it is possible to distinguish the emergence of the brother of Pope Smurf - Ron (Kurt Russell). By the way, Ron hairstyle and beard makes a direct reference to Russell. This trick is also designed for a senior audience, because children simply do not know who it is. One of the key plot codes is the search for the identity of Schurf named nameless (as we see, even with the name he did not have it).
