Commenting on the event, the military analyst Villa Nouler noted that the emergence of this version of the system "SolsPepke" indicates that "Omsktransmash" produces the Tos at the same time on the chassis T-72 and T-80. Moreover, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation did not reveal the technical parts, but recognized the use of the system in the Pokrovsky direction for the forces of the "Center" of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
According to Army Recognition Operators, this machine is equipped with armor "relict", lattice screens from drones, as well as means of radio electronic wrestling. The use of a modular gas turbine engine GTD-1250 with a capacity of 1250 hp was also noted, which provides the reverse speed of up to 11 km/h, unlike the version on the T-72 (840 hp, 4 km/h). This gives a tactical advantage when leaving the impact and simplifies the service in the field.
Despite the fact that the T-80 platform has better mobility and is adapted for integration of modern protective equipment, due to high gluttony and difficulty in maintaining gas turbine engines, its use has long been considered inappropriate. The idea of installing the Tos on the T-80 chassis is not new. It was first worked in the late 1990s in the Omsk on the basis of the T-80U tank. It was then proposed to increase fire power due to new 220 mm missiles weighing up to 90 kg and range up to 7 km.
However, due to the overload of the undercarriage, as well as constructive restrictions, the project was not adopted. Returning to the T-80 was possible after signing a new contract with Uralvagonzavod at the Army-2024 Forum. This solution is probably due to significant losses and wear of the T-72 and T-90 platforms, as well as limited production facilities. As of March 2025, according to intelligence, Russia has lost at least 31 Tos-1A system, including destroyed and captured.
