The ISW told how the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station influenced the result of the Armed Forces counter -offensive

According to analysts, Ukrainian operations on the left bank of the Kherson region could have a more pronounced effect if they started in June. The destruction of the military armed forces of the Russian Federation of the Damba Kakhovka Hydroelectric power plant in June 2023 detained the transition of the Defense Forces of Ukraine through the Dnieper to support Ukrainian counter -offensive operations. This is stated in the report of the Institute of War Study (ISW) of December 27.

Analysts say, referring to an interview with the military personnel of special operations of Ukraine that Ukrainians were preparing to force the Dnieper, but the destruction of the dam made them postpone their plans. The authors of the report mentioned that Ukrainian operations on the eastern bank of the Kherson region forced the invaders to transfer troops from other areas of the front to the area.

At the same time, the authors of the publication believe that in June 2023 such actions would have a similar or even more pronounced effect. According to analysts, after the destruction of the hydroelectric power station, the invaders were thrown away parts of the 7th Airborne Division (VAT) from the Kherson region to the western part of the Zaporozhye region and to the border of Zaporizhzhya and Donetsk regions.

According to experts, this could not happen if Ukrainians were able to move to the left bank in June. The report states that Ukrainian terrestrial operations on the Left Bank of the Kherson region in combination with counter -offensive operations in the south of Ukraine and in the Bakhmut area, would put more pressure on the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, limiting their ability to balance the number of their soldiers and equipment in different areas.

"Thus, the destruction of the Kakhovsky dam probably played a role in the Ukrainian counter -offensive," - summed up in ISW. We will remind, on June 6, 2023 the Russian invaders undermined the Kakhovsk hydroelectric power station, resulting in flooding the closest settlements. According to Ukrhydroenergo, the hydroelectric power plant is not recoverable.
