The war made itself to know: what place Ukraine is in the ranking of economic freedom

To spread: Ukraine has demonstrated a little growth in the world rating of economic freedom, however, it still remains low among countries. Our country took 143 place among 165 states and territories. The rating is based on data for 2023, when Ukraine has already lived in a full -scale war. Experts emphasize that military conflicts traditionally restrict economic freedom, contributing to centralization of the economy.

This was reported in the annual study of Economic Freedom of the World 2025 from the Canadian Institute of Fraser Institute. Despite its difficult circumstances, Ukraine still improved its position compared to last year, rising from 150th place. Economic freedom is evaluated in five directions: government size, rule of law and property protection, access to reliable money, freedom of international trade and business regulation and labor market.

In 2023, Ukraine showed the following dynamics: the authors of the report state: "It can be said that the war is harming economic freedom. " According to them, militarized conflicts are almost always accompanied by increased centralized economy models, which are easier to adapt to war, but restrict market freedom. The first place in the ranking was preserved by Hong Kong, followed by Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United States.

At the other pole were Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Algeria, Iran and Myanmar. It is noted that in general, the level of economic freedom in the world falls for the fourth consecutive year after the 2019 record. It should be noted that in 2020 Ukraine ranked 131 place, and in the rating of economic freedom Heritage Foundation was in the 134th position out of 180 possible.
