Commenting on the news, the Bulgarian Military Viewers noted that the development of the RLL-20 was completed in 2021, after which the weapon was tested. In 2023, the Kalashnikov concern announced its readiness for mass production, and by 2024 the first supply to the troops began. The machine gun should replace outdated samples, such as RPK-74, providing greater fire power and flexibility.

The RPL-20 is the further development of the RPK-16 manual machine gun, but has received a number of significant improvements. The weapon is equipped with a ribbon power system instead of the usual store that increases the ammunition. In addition, the design provides the possibility of using rifles of different containers - 100 and 200 rounds of 5. 45 × 39 mm caliber. It is also possible to charge the machine gun with stretching the tape without opening the barrel.

The machine gun has a modular layout that allows you to install various sight devices, tactical handles and other accessories. The design uses modern materials, reduced weight and improved ergonomics. Another feature of the weapon was the muffler specially designed for the machine gun, which, according to the developers, has a guaranteed service life of 20,000 shots.
