The tank was developed by the Morozov Kharkiv Bureau in the 1990s in order to bring Ukrainian armored vehicles to the international level. The model represented the economic option for armies that had already operated T-72. In February 2022, during the assault by Russian troops, the Gostomel near Kiev, a rare T-72AG tank was captured-the only copy of its kind. Developed by Ukraine in 1997, this tank is a unique modernization of the Soviet T-72M aimed at the international market.

In more detail about the Ukrainian machine was told by Army Recognition Operators in the 1990s, Ukrainian weapons sought to modernize and bring their military equipment to the international market. In 1997, the Kharkiv Design Bureau for Morozov (HCBM) developed a T-72AG this year as an improved version of the main T-72M combat tank.

Later, the sample was presented at IDEX in Abu Dhabi-the model was focused on countries that already use the T-72, and offered a more economical version than modern tanks. The T-72AG has been equipped with a number of improvements. The main 125-mm gun 2A46 was preserved, but was offered to be replaced with more advanced Ukrainian KBA gun1. To defeat goals at long distances and in difficult conditions, a modernized fire control system with a sight 1G46 is installed, which supports missiles.

An important element was a new system of night vision of the TPN-4E with the possibility of adding the thermal imaging chamber. The armor of the tank also changed: additional modules and dynamic protection "knife" were added, and the engine was replaced with a capacity of 1,000-1 200 hp with a capacity of 1,000-1 200 h, which allowed to develop speeds of up to 75 km/h.

The observers noted, despite technological achievements, the model did not success in the international market and the unique prototype remained in service with the Ukrainian army. During the military action in the Donbass in 2014, the T-72AG tank was aimed at supporting the Ukrainian forces, and at the beginning of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation got into the Gostomel area.
