AVs against hypersonic missiles: special sensors will help in the atmosphere intercepting
Companies will be allocated a budget of several tens of millions of US dollars to improve their concepts and present military prototypes that could be tested under real conditions. Both companies have been working on the project since the end of 2021, the media said.
GPI systems must provide regional hypersonic anti -missile defense, launching specially modified missiles from the US Navy's surface ships in order to attack and destroy the approaching hypersonic rockets when they pass over the Earth's atmosphere. Hypersonic missiles can develop speeds above 5 strokes, which is 6125 km/h.
The main components of the new air defense system will be sensors capable of tracking hypersonic weapons, as well as GPI interceptor, which is started by the vertical start system. It will be placed on board the destroyers of the ARleigh Burke Navy to intercept the approaching hypersonic missiles in the planning phase. The GPI will fill the gap between SM-3 and SM-6 missiles that attack the enemy missiles at different stages of their flight, according to the material.
