US Navy want to improve SM-2 and SM-6 missiles: weapons would be useful for the Armed Forces-experts

Modernized missiles will receive a new guide and software system. Such weapons, convinced military analysts, would have closed the issue with the Aviation of the PCS of the Russian Federation. The US Navy has contract with Raytheon for $ 344 million to improve the SM-2 and SM-6 anti-aircraft missiles. In particular, modernization will affect the guidance systems that will open up new opportunities for the US fleet. This was reported on April 25 by Defense News.

"New SM-2 Block Iiicu and SM-6 Block Iu missiles will have extended target opportunities that will help Standard Missils interceptors see additional types of threats that they are intended to intercept," the material reads. Modernized missiles will have a new target and guidance system, and changes will also affect electronics and software. In the variant SM-2 Block Iiicu, the rocket will receive a new radar.

According to Defense Express observers, modernization will be performed not only for the US forces, but also for export users. This means that potentially new missiles can provide a "window window" to strengthen Ukrainian air defense. Experts believe that if the improved SM-6 appeared in service of the Ukrainian forces, it would accurately exacerbate Ukraine's air defense and solved the problem with the Aviation of the PCS of the Russian Federation.

"Since it is a means of defeat with a firing range up to 370 kilometers, which is able to destroy and ballistics, can be started, in particular, from adapted terrestrial launchers, which are already at the disposal of the US Navy and the US Army," experts emphasized. Recall that Norwegian weapons modernize the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile complex to intercept ballistic missiles.
