The smoking robot: the Russian Armed Forces use Courier complexes at the front for unusual tasks

Share: The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have expanded the functionality of the Courier ground robotic complex (GRC). Robots are now used on the battlefield to create smoke screens, a new mission type for this platform. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation published footage from the training ground in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, where the capabilities of the Courier NRC were demonstrated.

According to the agency, the operators of the "Courier" complexes form smoke-masking curtains in the specified sectors, which makes it possible to hide the routes of movement of Russian units. For these purposes, unified smoke grenades (UDSH) weighing 13. 5 kg are used, capable of creating a curtain 100-150 meters long for 8-10 minutes.

Oleksandr Kovalenko, a military expert and coordinator of the "Information Resistance" group, recalled that the "Courier" was first spotted in the Avdiiv direction in March 2024. At that time, the complex was a hybrid platform armed with an AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher. Then these systems were successfully destroyed by Ukrainian FPV drones. In April, the Russian side presented new modifications of the Courier NRTK: a minelayer, a transport platform and an option for evacuating the wounded.

In the second half of 2024, the production of complexes, according to estimates, reached 11-15 units per month, which contributed to their wider use at the front. According to Kovalenko, at the current moment, the "Courier" has evolved significantly: balancing has been improved, a control system has been implemented through an optical fiber coil, which increases resistance to means of radio-electronic warfare. Also, the stabilization of the weapons has been improved — PKT caliber 7.

62 mm — and in some modifications, reactive infantry flamethrowers "Dzhmil" in the amount of 8 to 10 launchers have been installed. We will remind you that Russia continues to develop robotic ground platforms and recently created troops of unmanned systems, actually repeating a similar initiative of Ukraine. Recently, a public crash test of ground-attack robotic complexes was held in Ukraine, which showed that the NRKs need serious refinement.
