Armenia became a member of the International Criminal Court: as they reacted in the Russian Federation

Armenian officials hope to use the ISS to solve problems with Azerbaijan. However, Russian diplomats have already managed to protest. The Armenian Parliament ratified the Roman Statute of the International Criminal Court. From now on, if President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin arrives in the country, he can be arrested. In Russia the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the situation.

The decision of the parliamentarians is referred to in the post of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, published on the social network X (formerly Twitter). The post states that the Roman Statute takes effect from February 1, 2024. It is noted that thanks to the support of vote in the Armenian Parliament, it joined 124 member states of the International Criminal Court. The Armenpress information portal reported on the response of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to events in Armenia.

Journalists indicated that the Russians sent a note of protest when the Armenian government sent proposals for ratification to the National Assembly. It also explains why it is similar to Armenians. In particular, officials noted that they plan to use the ISS to hold Azerbaijan, which in the fall of 2023 eliminated the Armenian enclave in Karabakh.

It is not stated whether government officials plan to apply the Roman Statute in the event of the emergence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has not yet published comments on the decision of Armenia: there is no corresponding post in the account of the X department. Information about the protest note was not found on the Russian Foreign Ministry portal.

The latest posts concern the UN International Court of Justice, which has decided on the claim of Ukraine. Armenia is mentioned in the context of relations with Azerbaijan - this was discussed on January 26 by a briefing on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova. Meanwhile, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the events of Armenia.

During a briefing on February 1, the official stated that Moscow was too disturbed by the ISS: the main thing is that it did not affect relations with Russia. It should be noted that the investigators of the ISS in the spring of 2023 raised suspicion against President Putin and his assistant, the widows on the children of Maria Lviv-Belova. According to the investigation, the Russians are involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children, so a warrant was issued for their arrest.

Putin's warrant had some problems during international visits: must be coordinated beforehand, so that it is not detained in accordance with the requirements of the Roman Statute. For example, the policy had to give up flight to South Africa, as he was not guaranteed by freedom. Meanwhile, children stolen from the Russian Federation are abducted by the Russians. In particular, in the fall of 2023 it became known about the return of an 18-year-old resident of Mariupol.
