Ukraine expects that the UN Court will accuse Russia of violating two internatio...

The clock is ticking: The UN International Court is preparing a large decision on the claim of Ukraine against the Russian Federation

Ukraine expects that the UN Court will accuse Russia of violating two international conventions, but issues related to compensation and reparations will be resolved at a separate meeting. In six months, the UN International Court of Justice may make a decision on Ukraine's first major lawsuit against Russia. The Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, an agent of Ukraine in the UN court Anton Korinevich, said this on the Ukrainian Radio.

"We all want things to be considered faster, but it is such a pace of international justice. The wheels of justice are not rotating very quickly, but they are spinning," he said. Ukraine expects that the UN Court will accuse Russia of violating two international conventions: a ban on terrorism financing and elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. "We definitely need to have decisions of international judicial organizations that record violations by the Russian Federation.

It is also important that this decision fixes the obligation of the Russian Federation to stop the corresponding violations and said that this decision is the basis for resolving the issue of compensation, reparation, in particular - Victims of such violations, " - said Korinevich. He also explained that the issues of compensation and reparations were resolved at a separate court session. "Although, of course, we cannot know what the court's decision will be," the ambassador added.

In January 2017, Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the UN International Court of Justice in the Hague in order to bring the Russian Federation to justice for committing acts of terrorism and discrimination during its illegal aggression against Ukraine. Much of the claim of Ukraine concerns the restriction of the rights of Crimean Tatars in Crimea.

Ukraine also wants the UN Court to recognize that the Russian Federation has ignored the obligations within the Convention on the Financing of Terrorism, as it supported the illegal armed forces of the L/DPR, which carried out terrorist acts in our country. In February 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared a new lawsuit against the aggressor country in the midst of a full-scale invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine.

"We demand that Russia be held accountable for distorting the concept of genocide to justify aggression. We ask the court to immediately order the Russian Federation to terminate hostilities and appoint a hearing next week," the Head of State said. Thus, Ukraine rejects Moscow's statement that the Russian Federation has invaded the country in order to "prevent genocide".
