66 million rubles of losses and a paralyzed network: GUR attacked "Orion Telecom"

To spread: Siberian Internet Provider "Orion Telecom" has suffered serious financial losses of more than 66 million rubles through a cyber attack, which was carried out by specialists of GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. During the incident, there was a leakage of personal data of clients, which is why the company appealed to Russian law enforcement officers to initiate criminal proceedings.

According to the data obtained by Ukrinform from sources in the General Directorate of Intelligence, Cyberatak on Orion Telecom was held in the summer of Russia. On that day, the work of the provider was completely paralyzed, which led to serious interruptions in access to the Internet and television in the region. Particularly affected by a closed city specializing in uranium production, where Orion Telecom was the only provider of telecommunication services.

The locals of Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Bratsk and Abakan have reported massively the lack of communications that were actively discussed in local publications. According to GUR sources, the Provider officially recognized losses of 66 million rubles and confirmed the fact of the leakage of personal data of users as a result of the Cyber ​​Operation. In this regard, Orion Telecom appealed to the Russian police to open criminal proceedings to investigate the incident.

In addition, according to the current Russian legislation, the company can be fined up to 15 million rubles for the leakage of personal data. In Ukrainian intelligence, it is emphasized that Orion Telecom's networks were actively used by Russian law enforcement agencies to carry out aggressive actions against Ukraine.

That is why the Cyberoperative was strategic - it paralyzed critically important infrastructure and demonstrated the effectiveness of Ukrainian cyber units in deterring military activity of the Russian Federation. The sources add that GUR attack also caused large -scale technical problems in the work of the Provider: part of the servers and network units was failed, which for some time made it impossible to maintain users in several regions of Siberia.

In addition to financial losses, the incident emphasized the importance of cyber defense and control over personal data in leading telecommunication companies of Russia.
