Nuclear weapons production will be transformed into a solar power plant

During its work, the company has produced two -thirds of Plutonium needed to create a US nuclear weapon. The US Ministry of Energy (DOE) will process the former Plutonium development facility in Washington at a solar power plant with a capacity of 1 GW. About it reports Interesting Engineering.

As coal and gas power plants are closed, companies operating in renewable energy sources are activating efforts to re -profile the main facilities and ensure continuity of jobs for those who work in the industry. The Ministry of Energy uses a similar approach to re -profiling its land that was previously used in the US nuclear program. At a Washington DOE, a DOE site in General in Washington, one of the largest solar and rechargeable energy storage projects.

During the Second World War and the next 40 years it was a cure for Plutonium-239 production. During its work, the company has produced two -thirds of Plutonium needed to create a US nuclear weapon. The factory processed approximately 250 g of metal plutonium from one ton of irradiated uranium daily. After the cessation of production activities, the DOE initiated the cleaning program of the territory, which employed about 11,000 people.

Now that the cleaning operation is completed, the object is ready for a new role - the role of the farm in the production of solar and rechargeable energy. Hecta Energy was entrusted to this project. Experts will install solar panels on a plot of 8000 acres. The power plant will produce a capacity of 1 GW. This figure almost corresponds to a capacity of 1. 2 GW, which is produced by the Columbia nuclear power plant in the adjacent area.
