The Cyril Cyril incident is included in the general context of a deeper study conducted by journalists with Espiomats and which is dedicated to the possible cases of Russian spies in the structures of the European Union, which operate under diplomatic cover.
In addition to the German edition of Spiegel, this research project also involves the following publications and organizations: the Belgian edition of De Tijd, the Swedish Expressen, the Estonian Delfi, the Lithuanian Lithuanian LRT, the Polish Vsquare and the Fronstory, as well as the Center for the Emigrants. , and Slovak ICJK. According to the source, Kirill Logvinov has been accredited as a diplomat of Russian permanent representation in Brussels since 2018.
Since then, as the previous ambassador of Russia under the European Union has left its position about a year ago, Logvinov actually took the position of head of representation. In 2010-2014 he worked at the Russian Embassy in Berlin, then he was not suspected of a possible spy. According to journalists, the Belgian security bodies are suspected that Cyril Logvinov may be related to the RSS (Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service).
Belgium is feared that other Russian representation staff may also carry out secret activities against the interests of the European Union. The interlocutors from the security structures did not want to comment on what kind of activity was discussed. Direct comments on Logvinov in Belgium refused. Suspicions against Logvinov appeared last year and were probably first mentioned in the EU Observer material on the activities of probable Russian agents.
At that time, Logvinov was not yet the actual chairman of the representation. Following the publication of Cyril's information, the Logvinov Parliament began investigating possible links between him and the European Commission. However, representatives of the European Commission denied the existence of such contacts. The question of how to be with this Russian diplomat is allegedly worried about European diplomatic circles and special services.
According to sources, Belgian counterintelligence was likely to raise the issue of Cyril Logvinov's expulsion, but the European Foreign Affairs Service (EEAS) expressed the opposite position, perhaps fearing the possible negative consequences for her own diplomats in Russia. Vice president of the European Parliament Martin Goisik, at the request of the co -authors of the study, was surprised that Logvinov has not yet been sent.
"If the Belgian security structures were really recommended to send it, I am very interested in why EEAS did not do it," the official said. Representatives of the European Foreign Affairs Service stated that they do not comment on individual cases of persons who have diplomatic status. However, in general, they emphasized that they constantly monitor the threat of espionage in close cooperation with the relevant structures.
