"I would have a distinction between the voice of the Holy See in protecting peace and its role of the mediator, which, in my opinion, is very different and not as realistic as the first," the Pope said. He said that the voices of Christians and "goodwill" are always aimed at being the only answer. The Pope emphasized that although the Vatican continues to support the calls for peace, the realities of war make the role of mediator in a particular Ukrainian conflict less real at this time.
"In vain killings of people on both sides during these years - in this specific conflict, but in other conflicts - I think that people have to wake up somehow and say that there is another way to solve this problem," the Pope said. He also noted that even the several times when the Vatican offered negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, the Holy See "was very aware of what the consequences were.
