According to them, the demand to remove wordings that confirm territorial integrity and condemn the occupation of Crimea by Russia alarmed Kyiv and its allies. The resolution submitted by Ukraine to the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly has the official title "Situation of human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
" Last December, the United States was among 78 countries that voted for the document. Its text clearly defines Ukrainian territorial integrity and sovereignty and condemns the Russian occupation of Crimea, as well as describes in detail the violation of human rights in the occupied territories.
According to the journalists' diplomatic sources, the White House is now insisting on removing these two wordings and rewriting the document under the broader term "war in Ukraine", without referring to "aggression" or "territorial integrity". Insiders noted that Western partners fear softening of the UN's annual criticism of the Russian invasion and the breakdown of bipartisan consensus in the organization due to such decisions.
"This is another example of how Washington is moving away from the main interests of Ukraine at a critical diplomatic stage. If these formulations are rejected, it will be a signal to Moscow that the US is no longer leading the defense of the international order," said one of the European diplomats. This document lays the groundwork for future prosecution of Russia at the International Criminal Court and other venues.
The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly is due to vote on the resolution in the coming weeks. According to journalists, several European diplomats are lobbying the US to change its course before the vote.
The day before, the Independent International Commission to Investigate the Situation in Ukraine presented the said committee with a report with conclusions that the Russian Armed Forces are committing crimes against humanity in the occupied territories, including murders, forced resettlement, and forced deportations.
It will be recalled that during a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23, Donald Trump criticized the organization for insufficient use of its potential and inability to stop conflicts, and also noted that the long war in Ukraine makes Russia weaker and "does not add prestige to it.
