Ceasefire, pressure on Russia, presidency of Canada in G7, bilateral cooperation: Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Mark Karney

In Rome, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a first meeting with Canada Prime Minister Mark Karney, during which they discussed a complete and unconditional ceasefire, pressure on Russia, continuation of Ukraine's support and Canada's presidency in G7. “We admire what you do. We admire your dedication of peace that you have shown again this week.

And we emphasize that there can be no peace without full support and participation of Ukraine, and you have our absolute support, ”said Canada Prime Minister. Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Canada and the Canadian people for the adamant support of Ukraine from the very beginning of a full -scale Russian invasion.

The President stressed that this week there was a real opportunity to take an important step before the end of the war - to reach a ceasefire - if a meeting between Ukraine and Russia in Turkey took place at the highest level. "We really waited for Putin, but he didn't appear. We believe that he is afraid of direct bilateral negotiations. But nevertheless, I think the decision to exchange prisoners of war is very important. A thousand people are many.

And I hope we will get this result, ”Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The head of state briefly spoke about negotiations in Istanbul and stressed: it is important to coordinate joint efforts with partners. “We need to increase pressure on Russia, Putin to really reach peace as soon as possible. And of course, the unconditional ceasefire is very important. That is why pressure is needed. More pressure, more sanctions.

We are grateful to you for your sanctions packages, as well as European leaders and, of course, the United States of America, ”the President said. The head of state informed about Russian missile and drone strikes on civilians and noted that Ukraine needs to strengthen air defense to protect lives. Particular attention was paid to Canada's presidency priorities in G7.

Ukraine counts on strong additional sanctions, including secondary, against the banking and energy sectors, as well as against the shadow tanker fleet of Russia. In addition, it is important that the G7 focus continues to support Ukraine, to achieve fair peace and to guarantee security. The leaders also discussed defense, energy and economic cooperation, potential projects of joint production, the participation of Canada in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
