Ukraine is preparing for the cessation of Russian gas transit since January 1 - Galushchenko

December 31 expires the term of the agreement of Ukraine with the Russian "Gazprom" on transit. The Ukrainian authorities stated that it did not plan to conclude a new contract. Ukraine is preparing for the cessation of gas transit from Russia to Europe from January 1, 2025. Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko during the German-Ukrainian Business Forum in Berlin declared measures to ensure the stability of his own gas transmission system (GTS). About it reports the news agency "Ukrinform".

"Our position is quite open: we are preparing for zero transit from January 1. And we do it (prepared-ed. ) For a long time. Only this year we have conducted several stress tests for our gas system, as it will function with zero transit" , - said Galushenko. The contract between Naftogaz of Ukraine and the Russian Gazprom, concluded in 2019, is completed this year. Ukraine clearly stated that there would be no new agreement.

The transit of Russian gas through Ukraine began in the 1960s with the commissioning of a gas transportation system, which became a key route for natural gas supply from Russia to Europe. Ukraine remained the main transit of Russian gas to European countries for over 50 years. In the first two decades after Ukraine's independence, more than 100 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped annually through the country's gas transmission system.

In the 1990s, transit volumes reached historical maxima, but after the Winter "Gas War" between Naftogaz and Gazprom, in 2009, they began to gradually decline. After 2019, the transit was carried out under a contract for 5 years, which provided a minimum guaranteed volume of gas pumping. Since 2022, Gazprom began to gradually reduce the volume of transit.
