The Institute of War Study (ISW) suggests that the Russian command probably consciously goes on such losses, putting territorial achievements in the first place. The ISW experts, having analyzed geolocation, estimated that in January, Russian troops were able to capture approximately 498 square kilometers in Ukraine and Kursk region of the Russian Federation, which averages 16. 1 square meters. km per day.
At the same time, according to them, there are about 96 dead or wounded occupiers for each square kilometer of the captured territory. For comparison, in December 2024, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation lost 48,670 soldiers, which became the highest indicator for the entire full -scale war. At the same time, during this period, they were able to capture 593 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.
"Reduction of the captured territory by about 100 square meters from December 2024 to January 2025 in combination with a similar monthly loss indicator indicates that Russian troops suffer the same high losses, despite the achievement of less territorial advance , - said in the report of the Institute of War Study.
