8 billion cubic meters of LNG from Russia - 67% more than the same period of 2021, to a full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. By February 2022, Russian gas, including pipeline and liquefied, covered about 45% of Europe's needs for energy. After the start of the war, the EU actively began to reduce the dependence on Russian energy resources. The European Commission has already proposed to completely stop the import of all Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
The initiative was supported by most EU countries, but Slovakia and Hungary opposed. Russian gas has been sanctioned by the EU, the United States and their allies, restrictions relate to transit, investment and gradual abandonment of long -term contracts. The new, 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which still has to be approved by EU countries, is proposed to ban the import of Russian LNG by the end of 2026-a year earlier than the initial plans.
According to experts, the initiative is related to pressure from the US and Donald Trump. To reduce the dependence on Russian supplies, the EU actively increases the purchase of LNG in the United States: if in 2021 the share of US gas was 28% of EU imports, it increased to 45% by 2024. Recall that Russia is rapidly losing revenues from energy exports. Attempts to compensate for the loss of the European market at the expense of China do not yet bring the Kremlin expected profit.
