Northumbria police said the first shell was found in mid -January - an old mortar shell. And when the construction work was restored, the shells were found even more. The Ministry of Defense then conducted a full survey of the terrain, where 65 bombs weighing 5 kg each. The next day, they expanded their area and found another 90 bombs.
The local authorities reported that the shells found are called training bombs because they are not combat, but they still carry a charge and were found with intact detonators and content, so they could explode at any time. More bombs are expected to be found in the park as excavations will last for the next few weeks. The police added that this was a difficult situation. "We have only cleared about a third of the entire park, and we can still find another pit with new bombs," militiamen said.
