From Ukraine's complete victory to improving the position in negotiations with the Russian Federation: the event changes the strategy - ISW

Foreign journalists say that in negotiations with the Kremlin Ukraine will have to make territorial concessions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov believes that the West is trying to freeze the war and present it as a victory.

The Russian leadership adheres to its maximum purposes in Ukraine and is not interested in negotiations, despite the report that representatives of the event consider the possibility of talks of Ukraine from the Russian Federation on the termination of the war. About it writes "Institute of War Study" in the summary of December 27.

The unknown representative of the US Presidential Administration Joe Baiden and the European diplomat informed Politico journalists (the material was published on December 27) that Baiden's administration and European officials depart from the previous installation, which provided for a complete victory of Ukraine over the Russian Federation, and expressed in support of improving Ukraine about ceasefire.

According to Politico journalists, in such negotiations, Ukraine will probably have to make territorial concessions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov declared December 27 that the event was trying to freeze the war in Ukraine and then to present it as a victory. He asked a rhetorical question about the victories of the United States in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, where they allegedly tried to do the same.

Lavrov's reference to the United States in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraqi makes it possible to assume that Lavrov is considering Western debate on freezing war and preparing for possible negotiations with the Russian Federation as a willingness to recognize the defeat of Ukraine.

Lavrov's statements are also agreed with recent statements by Russian officials that any negotiations are not in the interests of the Russian Federation, and that the country will pursue its expansionist territorial goals. Earlier in ISW it was evaluated that the temporary stopping of hostilities is likely to give Russian troops time to prepare for a new aggression against Ukraine, and that the Kremlin will eventually comply with the same maximum goals during the new aggression.
