Despite the war: Metinvest develops a plan of transition to "green" metallurgy - CEO of the company

Despite the crisis and the full -scale invasion of Russia, Metinvest develops a new plan of environmental policy and introduces projects to reduce emissions at metallurgical plant. Seo Group Yuri Ryzhenkov told this in an interview with PWC manager in Ukraine AGO. "Metinvest is not only a Ukrainian but also a European company. We have to meet all the requirements that are quite strict.

Now Ukraine seeks to accelerate entry into the EU, which means that our business will need to transition to new standards faster than It was foreseen at first, "Ryzhenkov emphasized. He emphasized that the environmental strategy remains unchanged, despite the war: the company is focused on the transfer of enterprises to high quality iron ore for iron recovery technology (DRI), which is crucial for sustainable steel production in Europe.

"This is of particular importance because we do not have secondary raw materials for electric furnaces. And this is a global issue for Ukrainian metallurgy, which for the" green transition "is strategically important to keep as much as possible secondary raw materials as possible - scrap metal as possible," Ryzhenko explained. Metinvest's plans, according to him, are the projection of direct recovery iron production-Dri-opaque and hot-shaped iron (HBI) in Kryvorizhzhya.

In addition, the company is working on projects aimed at a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in the short and medium term. "This involves the gradual elimination of blast furnaces and their replacement with electric furnaces. This will reduce CO2 emissions to a level that is now considered a standard for sustainable steel production in Europe," Ryzhenkov summarized.
