The UN EU permanent representative Stavros Lambrinidis stressed that Russia's illegal capture significantly increases the risks to nuclear security, which can potentially lead to serious consequences for Ukraine and abroad. The Russian Federation is full of responsibility for nuclear security, because for the first time in history, a state that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council illegally seized another state nuclear power plant.

This is stated in the statement of the countries of the European Union, Ukraine and other European countries, which was read at a meeting of the UN Security Council of Post -EU EU at the United Nations Stavros Lambrinidis, Ukrinform said. Lambrinidis noted that the Zaporizhzhia NPP was captured by the Russians, it became a direct target in hostilities.

"This emphasizes that the illegal seizure of the station by Russia significantly increases the risks to nuclear and physical nuclear safety, which can potentially lead to serious consequences for Ukraine and abroad," Lambrevidis said. He stressed that for the first time the country, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, illegally seized a nuclear power plant one of its neighbors.

According to the EU Post -EU at the UN, Russia's attempts to seize a Ukrainian nuclear power plant are illegal and therefore have no legal force under international law. "The return of the ZPP under the full control of the Ukrainian authorities is the only solution that will end the current serious threats of nuclear security," Lambrevidis said.
