Austria has changed its mind to block the 19th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, — Reuters

Share: Austria, which demanded that the EU lift sanctions on part of Russian assets in order to compensate Austria's Raiffeisen Bank International for fines imposed by Russia, will not block the adoption of the 19th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Thus, before the vote on October 20 in Luxembourg, a key obstacle is removed, Reuters reports.

"Austria supports further pressure on Russia and will approve the 19th package of sanctions on Monday," the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Earlier, when Austria demanded to unfreeze some of the Russian assets, the EU did not support this proposal. To pass the sanctions package, the unanimous support of 27 EU member states is required.

The sanctions package contains a number of energy and financial measures, including a ban on the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2027, which has been moved to an earlier date of January 1, 2028. Slovakia also expressed doubts about this, but four EU diplomats said that the European Commission intends to publish a letter on the day of the vote to respond to the country's concerns.
