Do the Russians believe in victory over Ukraine and whether they support the war: the results of the survey

According to a study of public opinion, more Russians began to believe in the victory of their country. Moreover, there is a steadily high support for hostilities. Support for hostilities in Ukraine by Russians remains steadily high since the beginning of 2022. Only a third of the respondents is ready to accept moral responsibility for the death of peaceful Ukrainians and destruction. These data are presented in the results of a study conducted by an independent Russian Levada-Center.

According to the report, in January 2024, 77% of respondents were supported by the war against Ukraine, while 16% did not approve of such actions, and another 8% were unable to decide. However, the number of supporters of the transition to peace talks exceeds the number of those who support hostilities: 52% against 40%. Although in recent months the proportion of peace talks has decreased from 57% to 52%, this still corresponds to the average annual value.

One third of the Russians believes that they are moral responsibility for the death of civilians and destruction in Ukraine (10% - completely, 21% - partially), while 62% of those surveyed hold the opposite point of view. The survey also showed that most Russians have confidence in the duration of the war against Ukraine. Almost half of the respondents (45%) suggests that hostilities will last for more than a year, and another 23% expect the conflict to last from half a year to a year.

In total, 77% of Russians believe that the war against Ukraine will end with a victory for Russia, which is 6% more than a year ago, and is approximately in May 2022. Two -thirds of Russians (66%) agree that the Russian Federation pays too high a price for the war against Ukraine, while 25% disagree with this statement. The share of agreements with this statement has sharply decreased in the last half of the year, from July 2023 (when it was 82%) to the present time.

In addition, 64% of Russians do not believe that the Russian Federation has made mistakes, starting war. All-Russian Levada-Center conducted a nationwide research from December 14 to December 2023 and from January 25 to January 31, 2024 on a representative sample of residents of cities and rural areas of Russia, which covered 1606 and 1621 and 50 regions, respectively. The study was carried out by conducting personal interviews in respondents in their home space.

The percentage ratio of answers is relative to the total number of survey participants. We will remind, in November 2023 the results of the survey showed that most Russians are ready to support Vladimir Putin if he announces the end of hostilities, but if new territories are preserved. Earlier, in October 2023, the Levada Center published a survey that indicated that most of the Russians surveyed stated that they would support the idea of finishing the war in Ukraine in the near future.
