The EU is discussing gas transit through Ukraine as a condition of peace agreement with Russia - FT

The idea of restoring Russian gas supply to Europe, even in previous discussions, has already caused a negative reaction among Ukraine's closest allies in the EU. EU representatives discuss whether the sale of Russian pipeline gas to European countries should be restored as part of the potential end of the war in Ukraine. Financial Times writes about it with reference to sources.

It is reported that supporters of such a decision claim that this event encourages Russian officials to sit at the negotiation table to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine. In addition, after the peace agreement is concluded, this should guarantee the ceasefire. Among other things, this should allow you to reduce high energy prices in the EU. The initiative is supported by representatives of Germany and Hungary, as well as representatives of a number of other EU countries.

Mainly, they were interested in the opportunity to reduce energy prices, clarified one of the interlocutors of the publication. At the same time, this idea has "angry" officials in Brussels and Eastern European diplomats. "It's madness. How much should we be stupid, even thinking about it as a possible option?" One of them explained.

Moreover, it is noted that the discussion of this issue has already adversely affected the American exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which are trying to conclude long -term contracts for supply to Europe. Several EU representatives say that US suppliers are afraid that the restoration of gas transit through Ukraine will reduce the competitiveness of their products.

After the supply through the Ukrainian territory has been stopped since the beginning of 2025, the share of Russian pipeline gas decreased to approximately 5% of the total import of the EU. It should be reminded that, according to the sources of focus, drivers cannot fill cars through a large -scale cyberattack on Gazprom. It was also reported that new details of the UAV attack of the Russian Federation appeared.
