Zelensky appointed Olga Reshetylova as a military ombudsman: what is known about her

Share: Ukrainian political activist, human rights defender and journalist Olga Reshetylova (Kobylinska) became a military ombudsman. The relevant decree was signed by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi on October 16. By another decree, he dismissed her from the position of the authorized president of Ukraine for the protection of the rights of servicemen and their family members. Olga Reshetylova became the first military ombudsman in the history of Ukraine.

"This is a real protection of the rights of our soldiers. It is important that this is felt at all levels in the Defense Forces of Ukraine: we do what strengthens the army, we also do what strengthens the soldiers in our army," Volodymyr Zelenskyi said. The newly appointed military ombudsman is a co-coordinator of the "Media Initiative for Human Rights" (MIPL), where she is mainly responsible for the communication direction.

According to "Suspilne", she graduated from the Ostroh Academy and has extensive experience in journalistic work. In particular, she held the position of editor of the regional network department in the socio-political newspaper "Den", was a special correspondent of the Russian liberal mass media Grani. Ru in Ukraine.

In 2014, Reshetylova became a co-founder of the "Return Alive" fund, one of the largest in support of the Armed Forces, where she was responsible for coordinating the fund's work with law enforcement agencies and directly with the forces and means of the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine.

Even then, during trips to the front, she encountered violations of human rights in the combat zone, which influenced her decision to switch to public monitoring of the observance of justice regarding the events of the war. Olga Reshetylova left the foundation in 2015, focusing on journalistic and public investigations of violations in the security sector. She also worked as a project manager at the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union (UHUSHPL).

In 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed her to the Commission for the election of the head of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption. On December 30, 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed a decree on the appointment of Olga Reshetylova as the representative of the President of Ukraine for the protection of the rights of servicemen and members of servicemen's families. Reshetylova is Olga Kobylynska's maiden name.
