Despite the seriousness of the statements, the reaction of European leaders was more than restrained. The Chairman of the European Parliament Robert Metsola called it a "typical reaction" from Moscow. And Mette's Danish Prime Minister Frederixen stressed that Russia cannot be allowed to dictate its conditions through threats.

"Fear and leadership do not go hand in hand. The only red line I see in this war has already been crossed when they attacked Ukraine," he said.
