Mark Bok previously served as an officer in the US Navy and recalled that during the Cold War, military searched for submarines with the help of "passive sonar" - highly sensitive equipment that captures sounds. Later, quieter submarines appeared, so they began to be caught by echolocation. CAPTAS-4 uses a similar principle-the device can be dropped from the ship's feed and lowered to a depth of 15 to 180 meters, the most effective for searching for submarines.
Once in a given position, the equipment begins to produce sound waves that are reflected from objects and their location, then data are transmitted to the ship. Mark Bok highlighted two main advantages of the system - the great action radius and distribution of signals. Since the CAPTAS-4 "noise", the submarine can hear and dump it and then attack it. However, the signal of the enemy's location will not receive a drone, but another vessel that will not be known.
"This is a very scary scenario for the submarines. And the US should be proud that they will have such a defense advantage," Thales said. According to Mark Bok, the CAPTAS-4 contract will be adapted for use on US military frigates of the Constel (FFG-62). The first Thales system promises to present in November this year. Earlier in the United States, they revealed how drones and robots in the war were used.
