The galleries incriminate the fact that between April and December 2022, she allegedly transferred a painting by the American artist George Condo called Escape from Humanity to the Russian collector Alexander Popov, who together with his wife runs an art foundation near Moscow, writes The Times. The investigation was conducted by HMRC. This is the first indictment under the new law, which bans the supply of luxury goods to Russia after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The ban covers goods worth more than £250, including works of art, cars, jewelery and fashion. Princess Eugenie, the 35-year-old daughter of the Duke of York, has been working with Hauser & Wirth since 2015 and is a director of the gallery, but does not sit on the board of the London office. The case file does not mention that she had anything to do with the possible violation.
Also involved in the case is the transport company Artay Rauchwerger Solomons Limited (formerly Art Logistics Limited), which is accused of violating sanctions between August and December 2022. The company was voluntarily liquidated last year. Prosecutor Alex White told Westminster Magistrates' Court that the charge carried an unlimited fine.
A representative of the Hugo Keith gallery said that the company insists on hearing the case in the high court and intends to enter a plea of not guilty. The next hearing is on December 16 at Southwark Crown Court. Hauser & Wirth representatives said the gallery "fully complies with all legal requirements, including sanctions" and "vehemently denies" the allegations.
