Finland supports harder visa restrictions for Russians - Foreign Ministry

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Kaavisto considers it possible to have a complete ban on the issuance of tourist visas to EU countries for Russian citizens. The minister told about it in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat. According to him, the decision on a complete ban on the issuance of tourist visas for Russians will require that EU countries will simultaneously introduce visas issued for humanitarian reasons for critically -minded journalists, public activists or opposition representatives.

Baltic countries have introduced similar visas. Video of Kaavisto Day says that a ban on issuing visas for Russians requires an EU's joint approach. The Minister assured that Finland had imposed restrictions on visas for Russians on the basis of current EU legislation. Finland will arrange if "the EU makes visas the subject of sanctions and introduces them to the whole EU on the basis of a clear legal framework. " “We are now waiting for the EU instructions.

We are ready for harsh measures, ”Havisto said. Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, who decided to completely close their borders for Russian tourists, were introduced by the most severe visa regime for Russian citizens. It is noted that, despite the new Finnish visa policy on Russians by new EU standards, compared to Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Finnish restrictions are more permits among Russia's border neighbors with the EU.
