"It is not excluded that if Estonia remained in the so -called gray zone, what we are now seeing in Ukraine could happen in our territory," Margus Tahkna said. The head of the department said that the efforts of diplomats and politicians have led to Estonia's accession to the Alliance for decades. The actions of the authorities gave results and defended citizens of the country.
"Our path to joining the Alliance was not smooth and straight, but became possible due to hard work and coincidence of circumstances," the minister added. Tsakhkna also stressed that NATO will celebrate its 75th anniversary next week. According to him, the NATO open door policy made the block stronger than ever, on the eve of its Great Anniversary.
"Since NATO is the only guarantee of security that Russia understands, we expect Ukraine to become a member of the Alliance as soon as possible," he said. Estonia joined NATO in 2004. Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia also joined the Alliance. For the first time, these states were invited to start negotiations on membership during the 2002 Summit. They joined the Alliance shortly before the 2004 summit in Istanbul.
