Despite the inequality of forces, Croatian defenders won the bloody war for independence. Video Day Four -Year Conflict took about 20,000 lives, forced tens of thousands of refugees to leave their homes and was remembered by the manifestations of extraordinary cruelty by all sides of the confrontation.
Having considered more than a hundred cases of military crimes and crimes against humanity during the Balkan wars, including ethnic cleansing, torture, rape, murder, robbery and forced movement, the international tribunal against the former Yugoslavia has made dozens as well as other ethnic groups that inhabited the Republic of Yugoslav.
The main battle of the first stage of the war, which lasted until mid -January 1992, was the battle of the city of Vukovar in the Eastern Croatian region of Slavonia. Since August 25, 1991, the city has lived by siege without electricity, water supply, communications and food. He was defended by several thousand poorly armed but well -motivated Croats, which was opposed by more than 30,000 Yugoslav Army and Serbian forces with aircraft, hundreds of tanks and dozens of artillery systems.
In the end, the Yugoslav Army managed to capture Vukovar, but before that it was almost completely destroyed. After the fall of the city, ethnic cleansing began, during which hundreds of people were killed. Croats returned control over Vukovar, which became a symbol of resistance and national unity in the struggle for independence, only in 1998. As of the end of 1991, the Serbs had already controlled about a third of Croatia.
