The land at this place was forever frozen during the Quaternary Ice Age 2. 58 million years ago. Batpajk was first noticed by the locals in Yakutia, Russia, who claimed that they heard horrific sounds from there. When the forest was cut down in this place in the 1960s, the sunlight reached the earth and began to heat it.
The ice continues to thaw, which is why some scientists believe that the so -called "gates" can absorb most of the earth and may be a danger to neighboring villages, as more and more areas around it will start melting. Since 1991, the crater has tripled. According to the 2016 study, the Crater's size increased by an average of 10-15 meters per year. According to June 2024, the crater increases by average by 1 million m3 per year. In this case, 2/3 of this volume increases due to melting ice.
The reason for the growth of the crater is the melting of eternal permafrost, which occurs through warming. The rapid expansion of the crater exposes many petrified materials, including ancient forests, pollen and carcasses such as sheepskin, mammoth and horse, as well as other animals. In 2009, the skeleton of the foal aged 4 400 and the remains of the bison cubs were found here.
