The US may refuse to confiscate Russian assets: has become a known reason

The White House Head Advisor Jake Sullivan said the United States continues consultation with its partners on this issue in order to "act together". The United States may abandon the idea of confiscation of Russian frozen assets in favor of Ukraine if this proposal is not supported in the European Union and in the Big Seven countries. This is discussed in the material of the AR.

It is noted that in the United States, as of now, about $ 5 billion in the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which may be confiscated in accordance with the provisions of the Great Package of American Assistance to Ukraine and other allies, which was signed on April 24 by President of the United States Joe Biden.

The provisions of the Law on Restoration of Economic Prosperity and Opportunities for Ukrainians require the US President and the Ministry of Finance to start looking for Russian assets in the United States for the next 90 days and report to Congress within 180 days of search. A month after the completion of these procedures, the White House Head, Joe Biden, will be entitled to arrest, confiscate or transfer the rights to any Russian state assets within Washington's jurisdiction.

However, Washington intends to consult with allies for joint action, which can lead to a slowdown in this process. According to the Presidential Advisor on National Security Jake Sullivan, the US authorities continue to consult with partners to "act jointly". At the same time, the head of the US Ministry of Finance Janet Ellen reported that the United States is unlikely to take any action if there is no support from partners with G7.

On March 19, the Head of Diplomacy of the European Union Josep Borrel announced how the European Union plans to use frozen assets of Russia for the needs of Ukraine. In his opinion, these funds need to be directed to the purchase of weapons for the Armed Forces. On April 3, it became known that three countries do not support the proposal to freeze 200 billion euros of Russian assets.
