This innovative event, drawn at the DSTL landfill in Porton Down, demonstrated the ability of laser weapons to neutralize the enemy drones at a distance of more than 1 km. This was announced on July 22 by Defense Industry Europe. Experts emphasized that the laser system installed on the armored vehicle by the British Wolfhound is completely portable and easy to operate. It is able to track and strike several goals at the speed of light.
It is noted that this decision is a significant step forward in the UK Ministry of Defense Program to create a demonstration sample of land laser weapons (LDEW), which provides an operational advantage on the battlefield. In addition, the integration of the expanded Wolfhound demonstrator will allow the Ministry of Defense and the British Army to understand how useful LDEW systems are in the conditions of developing UAVs.
In the next stage of the tests, planned at the end of this year, tests with the participation of servicemen will be carried out, which will allow to evaluate the possibilities and benefits of the system in real conditions. With regard to the technical side of the issue, the laser system works with the control and control system and can be integrated with wider radar systems of combat management and observation systems.
In this case, weapons can be installed on different platforms to meet various operational needs. "Successful shooting from the first laser weapon integrated into a land vehicle in the United Kingdom, has proved that the Raytheon laser weapon system can track, strike and destroy target that technology is ready for hostilities, " - said CEO and director of Raytheon James Gray on this occasion.
