The new ring-wing drones of the Russian Armed Forces are used in the war in Ukraine: how dangerous are they

Share: The Ukrainian military fixes unusual circular-wing aircraft in the sky above the front. These could be Russian "Comet" drones. The "Ring wing" concept is not new, but it has not been used in practice on the battlefield before. Ukrainian military technology expert Serhii Beskrestnov ("Flash") drew attention to this on his Telegram channel.

At first, the military and experts could not name what kind of tool it was, but then representatives of the 14th separate regiment of unmanned systems assumed that it was "Comet". Outwardly, the product is really similar. The development was shown in the Russian television program "War Acceptance", which was broadcast on July 20, 2025. The Russian company "Step forward" presented two versions of a quadcopter with a ring wing.

The smaller one is intended for anti-aircraft defense, that is, it acts as a UAV interceptor. It is assumed that the tool will ram enemy drones, attack them with nets or explode if there is a warhead on board. The larger model is equipped with an RPG shot and is designed to hit ground targets. Both versions take off vertically, and at some point turn 90 degrees and start moving horizontally.

According to the developer Stanislav Petin, this scheme increases the flight range of the quadcopter by about three times. During the tests, if propagandists are to be believed, the UAV managed to fly about 40 km. However, at that time "Comet" had a very primitive communication system for control and video transmission. Perhaps the team managed to improve it, and then send it to the occupying forces in Ukraine for combat trials.
