The first KAB strike on Lozova: what is the danger of the new modification of the air bomb with which the Russians carried out the attack

Share: On the evening of October 18, the Russians first attacked Lozova in the Kharkiv region with the help of a guided aerial bomb (CBM). A new modification of the UMPB-5R aerial bomb was used to attack the Russian Armed Forces, which covered a distance of more than 130 kilometers. The new modification of the Russian UMPB-5R (unified cross-species gliding munition) belongs to the jet type. This was reported on the Telegram channel of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office.

"According to the preliminary data of the law enforcement officers, the city of Lozova was hit by a guided aerial bomb of a new modification - UMPB-5R (reactive type), which covered a distance of approximately 130 km," the agency said. As Vadim Kushnikov, a columnist of the "Military" publication, told Suspilno, the UMPB-5R was created on the basis of the FAB-250. According to him, the weight of the combat part of the ammunition reaches 99 kilograms in the explosive substance.

However, unlike conventional FABs with UMPB kits, which can reach targets at a distance of 60 kilometers or more, UMPB-5R aerial bombs are capable of reaching targets at a greater distance. The expert noted that this is facilitated by a low-power jet engine. It is he who allows you to increase the range of weapons. At the same time, it is known that the design is relatively not new, because the Russians were making similar ones even before the start of a full-scale war.

Since 2023, they have intensified their efforts in this direction. However, according to Kushnikov, currently the rate of production of these munitions by the Russians is not too high and reaches only hundreds per month. However, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation actively use this weapon for attacks on the front line, near-front population centers. Oleg Synegubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported on the KAB attack on Lozova.

According to him, the blow happened around 5:35 p. m. As a result of the shelling, a house caught fire and 11 private houses were damaged. Six victims are known, the official informed, showing footage of the aftermath of the attack. Instead, the prosecutor's office specified that the KAB was probably launched by the Russians from the occupied territory. It was also emphasized there that this is the first case of using the KAB for strikes on Lozova.
